I liked it, but mostly for the visuals. The script (and at times, the acting) felt a little stilted in moments. Like, "hey, they're actually becoming real good friends - see? see how this is totally not creepy in any way?" And it awkwardly hurtled back and forth between that and the "but I'm a prisoner!" bits, especially right before she leaves. I also felt like the kissing bit after he comes back to life (and other bits of the end) was strangely paced.

And I feel like I'm the only person in the world that was weirded out by the growl at the end. I was reading something about the movie where the comments were all, "that moment was so hot!". It's not like I can think of a better response to a girl asking a prince to be more like the cursed man-beast he was, but it was so cringey for me.

I agree about the visuals being good, although I'm not a fan of the yellow dress. It was pretty, but it looked WAY too modern, more like something you'd see on a red carpet in Hollywood than in 1700s France. That being said, the level of decoration on everything in the palace was bang-on. It looked incredibly opulent, which is what it was supposed to have been.

I mostly blame the stilted acting on poor directing. Emma Watson is a good actress, but there were a few moments where I'm just like, "Can someone PLEASE give her some direction?"

The most noticeable moment was Beast's transformation. When she was sobbing over his apparently dead body, that came across very real and it was actually moving, but during his actual transformation, where he's floating in midair with magical light glowing all around him, her expression just looked neutral. Like, y'know, someone staring at a tennis ball on a stick because all the effects are added in post. And them not sharing a word before kissing? Yeah, that was awkward, too.

I think that growl would have worked better if it had been a clearly human voice doing it, instead of the Beast's. The animal growl coming out of his human mouth was weird. If he had just said "Grr." or "Rar." that would have been cute and funny.

I think the yellow dress was as good as they could do, given the confines of the animated movie (can you imagine the fandom outrage if it hadn't harkened back to that iconic dress, which is not at all 1700s French?). I actually was impressed by the under-dress she wears for the climactic battle scene, and the Prince's clothing. They didn't shy away from the French dress (or the high heels for men!) anywhere else, so I was good with the ballgown.

I agree completely on the lack of direction and the transformation. That was the moment I was thinking of for the strange pacing. Also, the enchantress was right there! Did no one notice her? No one said anything to her, for sure. It was all kinds of awkward.

And yes! That might have solved the issue. The Beast's growl coming out of the human Prince was probably what made it so off-putting to me. Him playfully growling back in his normal, human voice would have been much more cute/sexy/funny.

I dunno, when cosplayers can make a version of the animated dress and it WORKS...the costume department could have tried harder.
