IA. The new Trek movies suffer a great deal from poor characterization and weak writing, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh that's going too far. It's definitely true of STID, but ST09 just didn't devote all that much time to characterization (for the sensible reason that it was a fast-moving action film) and what it did take the time to sketch was mostly fine and good. And Beyond was fine. So it's mostly STID bringing everything down like the massive putrid wet fart that it is.

Can we just pretend that those movies don't exist? Fucking Jar Jar Binks turned Star Trek into a Star Wars flick.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Counterpoint: there's literally one good Star Trek movie that's not an action thriller

Spock is gay? LOL

(Anonymous) 2017-03-29 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Can we please stop forcing queer identities onto every character? We're still behind with adequate representation of LGBT characters but turning straight characters into gay/cis/other people isn't helping. It's fetishistic and weird.

I hate Spock/Uhura with the fire of a thousand suns but you gotta chill.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't buy the whole Kirk/Spock because of how Kirk was always chasing anything in close to female. I do wish they would have made Uhura's character more like the show and a stronger woman. There is so much history behind that character. When TOS came out strong women were few and far between on TV and strong BLACK women didn't exist at all. Uhura was a role model for ALL girls because she was in a high position, was respected for her work and badass. I wish the movies paid more tribute to that.

Because men cannot be bi? Oh crap, I guess I missed the memo.

When did Kirk ever 'chase anything close to female'? Besides his wife in that one awkward Native American Planet episode.

I agree so so much, OP.

It's sad that 1960s Uhura is in many ways a superior character to the reboot Uhura.

This has so many sexist terminology in it I am inclined to believe this to be an over the top troll secret. It's also a really popular opinion, so.

I mean really, Whiny, bitchy, shrew, nagging, reduction to her sex (trophy pussy). These are all super gendered stereotype insults.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's... what the OP seems to be saying, though? It's not their opinion of her, it's what the writing reduced her to by liberally applying those stereotypes. I'm a staunch feminist and I agree with the whole thing.

There's sexist terminology in the secret because OP is complaining about the sexist portrayal of the character. I feel like you missed a rather big point.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
every role I've seen Zoe Saldana in has been a character with an unpleasant personality, I wonder if it's just her

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
that's exactly what I was thinking

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
No but I really, honestly think JJ believes women are that petty, that Uhura would put her own concerns over a rescue mission and the safety of Spock's family and hundreds of thousands of years of Vulcan culture and the lives Spock could possibly save that he was rushing off to. You know, women are like that.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like you are ignoring the part where he chose to create not one, not two, but three television shows with strong, smart, eminently capable female leads whom the viewer is very evidently meant to respect and admire.

Actually I think he just really wanted to blow up Vulcan. It's the equivalent of Russel T Davies and the Time War; the new boy wants to show he can do whatever he wants with the old universe.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
U mad?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Spock is gay?? Wow. No, the actor is gay and ZQ happens to be shit at his role and he is butt ugly. He couldn't act str8 to save his life.

Just admit you're a fucking Pinto and fuck off. Kirk and the uglier version of Spock aka Zack aren't the same as the originals yet you shippers blindly project onto the movie. Uhura isn't personally responsible for your demanding entitled gay fanon bullshit.

Oh no yt males and hetero! It's so much more forward and progressive and hipster to attack a woman and be heterophobic. You are very socially conscious for pointing out a common race and a common sexuality.
