(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)My liberal arts college required all freshmen to take one writing class and one oral communication (speech) class, which honestly I think is a good thing. It really emphasized how to construct an argument and cite your sources, which is the most basic of the basic but still a really important lesson.

So many of them really don't know how to structure an argument. I tried to help them, I did :( I even workshopped their ideas in class and tried to help them figure out how to phrase them as good arguments!
But this was not a writing course...

And English 102 was about poetry. I really could have learned how to write a technical brief, not how to analyze a poem.
