Re: spoilers for ffxv
Ardyn's backstory is pretty interesting. I think quite honestly that his design is a bit of a no for me (it's shallow, I know, but he looks so hilariously overdesigned to me) and the way everything always went his way was a bit boring in my eyes.
Some other thing I keep wondering about: Is the in-game world really that small that it's just basically one bigger city state and two countries? Even with the Empire as huge as it is, it seems so tiny...
I think the small in-between scenes could be interesting but at the same time massively disointed. Then again, I just played through Episode Gladiolus and... it's really short, so if the other DLCs are equally short, there really might just be a few short scenes covered after all...
I'd love to see a prequel but I think it's unlikely because they'd have to do a new kind of environment for that instead of just some recycled dungeon pieces and I'm not expecting they'd do that.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)lmao, no, I totally agree on Ardyn's design. It's like he fell into a drag queen's dumpster, rolled out of that one directly into a local community theatre's, and then just rolled with whatever stuck to him. AND THEN HE PUT A FEDORA ON TOP OF IT. (It definitely is frustrating that everything goes his way, though.)
I do think that's the case, yeah. This last update they pushed with Episode Gladio expanded the visible map, at least, so it gives you a bit more of the idea of the scale, but at the same time I was just giggling the other day about how if you're anywhere in Lucis and your quest marker is anywhere in Altissia, it's only like 8-9 miles away. Wow, brand-new far-off country EIGHT MILES AWAY, huh? You could walk there in just a few hours if it weren't for the ocean. Idk if they truly intended it to be such a tiny world (which would be interesting and make the day/night cycle being so brief make more sense than just 'video game time') or if it was just difficult to scale properly with a broad open-world map to explore in one part of the world, and very linear paths to follow in others.
Yeah, Episode Gladio's short for sure, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that his really was intended to be the shortest one, way more gameplay/score focused than story, so that kind of makes sense. I expect the others to be longer, since they've been said to be way more story-focused. (Episode Prompto especially; they've got a lot of ground to cover with him.)
You're probably right, though it'd certainly be cool. I suppose technically they'd still have the Insomnia set pieces to work with as holdovers from Vs.XIII, though? So you could probably rework those given enough time, and that'd be the best place for any prequel work.
Re: spoilers for ffxv
That's a perfect description of what Ardyn looks like, I'm crying!
Heh, 8-9 miles is even swimmable if you really had to.
I think they also had the plot conflicting with a bigger world, even if they'd wanted to have one. It's not very believable that one Empire has the majority of a huge world with dozens or even hundreds of countries under their control... But it would make the day/night cycle logical, and even though I believe that's not actually intentional, it's kinda nice. (I was pretty amused in-game about wondering with my friend about "wait, does it get dark at 3 pm already?" and characters mentioning it... several chapters later as if they only just noticed.)
I'm kinda expecting a bit of a brainfuck chapter with Prompto, considering I guess they'll cover his time spent in Ardyn's clutches. His head got messed with quite a bit during that time, I expect.
I could see them using a few older, now updated Insomnia pieces for the simple reason that a LOT in this game looks like it was designed with "we can reuse this in the FFVII remake" in mind.
Re: spoilers for ffxv
(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 12:18 am (UTC)(link)I'm sort of willing to suspend disbelief about the world size, I think, just because I've run across the idea of one country/empire/what have you holding the majority of the land even in worlds of our size-- the city-states of Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia from 1984 come to mind, for instance. So I could believe Eos is either really tiny (which really does seem to be the case, to be fair), or more or less Earth-sized with a lot of actual space cropped out for ease of motion/gameplay. It's an interesting discussion topic for sure! I do agree with you that the day/night cycle vs. world size probably isn't intentional at all, though, haha.
Oooh, yes, his chapter's gonna be rough. I'm almost certain it'll start on the train (where Ardyn is using illusions to make Noct attack Prompto), and go straight through to his being tortured by Ardyn. There's a lot of room in-between for brain-fuckery. (Especially considering that Chapter 13 Verse 2 confirmed that Ardyn can and will take Noctis' form to mess with people... you know he's going to do that to Prompto.) Not to mention the whole mess with the MTs. Ugggh, poor thing.
Oh, huh, I hadn't even considered them re-using set pieces for the VII remake. Insomnia does have a sort of Midgar-but-shinier feel to it, doesn't it? I knew they were going to essentially use the exact same battle system (with a little tweaking to allow for Materia), but I didn't think about other elements. I kind of wonder if the episodic content of XV is sort of a test run to see how well fans take to the concept before they do the same with VII?
Re: spoilers for ffxv
Yeah I mean most Final Fantasy games have fairly small scale worlds, even those with entire world maps to travel so...
I'm mostly wondering how that trailer/small preview scene in the snow will tie into the Prompto DLC - if that's an actual thing he does or if it's all some illusion that's just all in his head. Hm.
Midgar is pretty shiny on top of the city as well so they can use quite a bit of Insomnia material for that and some of bombed-out Insomnia for the slums beneath. Quite a few monsters are there as well, completely or in part (the Midgar Zolom, some of the weapons, a lot of the machinery...) and the carnival looked a lot like a test run for the Gold Saucer haha!
I guess they might use it as a test run, definitely. Altough I don't think there will be any changes to the episodic release (which I find a bit of a pity but ah, well. FFVII isn't the one Final Fantasy I most wanted a remake for anyway ;_;).
