...I mean, Light canonically having zero interest in women is kind of an important part of his character. He literally just uses them even as they gush over him, there's not a single moment where he ever expresses any interest in them. Even when he's not being Kira. Like, making him interested in women would be an actual huge change in his characterization, so there's a pretty good reason people might be annoyed if he's portrayed heterosexually.

(not saying there's a chance that he'll be portrayed as gay, but still, not straight is a reasonable expectation)

Lead character in a westernized production and you think he won't be straight? Riiiiiiiiiiight. Okay.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would that change be a silly thing to be mad about? I don't get what you're trying to say.

Plus, are you really suggesting that all male leads in Western movies have to have an active sexual interest in women? That's... not true. Especially since this movie is produced by Netflix.

He doesn't have to be straight. Plenty of Western characters show no sexuality. He can be 'not anything' like those, since not being swayed by sex is important to his character.

OP isn't saying they need him to be gay.

there is not a single moment where he expresses that interest in anyone. light only loves light.

that said the secret is not that they don't want to see him portrayed in a romance, stat, it's about heterosexuality in particular which means it's just your run of the mill shipping goggles. he could be straight or queer, no one knows because the show didn't show him being attracted to anyone

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What I got out of it was that OP wants Light to remain asexual instead of the only other possible option, straight.

They're hardly going to make him gay. There's not even a chance.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
and that's why they chose those panels, sure sure..

Eh, I'm not a shipper but it's hard to deny that Light's most major character interaction is (non-sexually) with L. I don't think Light is gay - like you said, Light's in it for Light only - but forcing in a het romance that eclipses that interaction would bother me too, just because it'd make it less important.

I guarantee you, he's gonna fuck Misa. Or whatever her American name is. I promise you that's gonna happen. I'd bet a million dollars on it.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah probably. But will it be out of genuine attraction or out of power/keeping her pacified?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but I think it'd be really cool if they made Light gay. The manga itself poked at the idea. Not a fujoshi, but I did think there was a sort of... element to the Light and L scenes that went deeper than just typical rivals, on some intellectual level they constantly seemed to be hate-fucking. At least, to the point where gay readings of Light don't make me mad.

But at any rate, the movie would be best off not showing him explicitly sexually interested in anyone. I think Death Note was one of those shows in general where less is more, because it really invites the audience to come to their own conclusions.

I don't really ship it, but I can see where you're coming from in that the only intellectual equal to Light in the manga was L and Light would hardly go for someone lower than that. If the canon - or a fanfic - was going to force a pairing, that'd be the only believable option, really.

I don't think he's actually gay in canon or that he'd go for anyone at all though.

Yes, let's make the self-righteous serial killer gay and have him kill his lover interest. That won't reinforce a bunch of negative stereotypes.
