I kind of agree, or at least I think he looks boring next to Joan. Early on his outfits were a lot more whimsical. I wonder what the rationale was behind the change...

I thought maybe they were trying to provide some contrast to Joan's wardrobe. Otherwise they kind of look like a hipster couple...

In the show, at least, he shaved his head three episodes ago.

I was about to ask the same thing. According to thezmage, he shaved his head, but he looks like he has male patterned baldness in that photo

He's had a receding hairline for quite some time, but a couple episodes ago Sherlock shaved his head as part of a deal with "Everyone" when they helped him on a case.
