(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)Not really the same thing, but I remember the time a friend of a friend with autism had a meltdown over breaking her phone. Anyone could've taken a video to show "psycho girl freaks out over broken phone" without understanding that this wasn't a drama queen temper tantrum, she really couldn't calm herself down.

On the one hand, mental illness fucks with your brain.
On the other hand, I do my damnedest to make sure that my bipolar isn't other people's problem. Having a chemical imbalance doesn't completely absolve you of taking any responsibility.
I'm from Santa Monica. I know that there are resources there: I was a client of the LA County Department of Mental Health for a few years. My psychiatrist was not the greatest, but she was free, and I got my meds for free.
I realize that in a lot of ways I was lucky. I got the kind of bipolar that doesn't come with psychosis. The first combination of mood stabilizer and antidepressant I tried worked well enough, and the side effects were annoying, but tolerable. (The Lamictal she tried as an add-on later? Not so much.) I'm smart, analytical, and well-socialized. I have family in the area that was willing to support me.
