When a piece of fanon that I don't like becomes so popular that it's impossible to get away from. The most common type is when a ship is seen essentially as canon and everyone casually refers to the characters in it as each other's boyfriend/girlfriend/bae or what have you.

Arg, this. Especially if they don't tag for it.

Ao3 really really REALLY needs a Background Pair section so people can avoid "Who doesn't like practically canon sibling incest pairings?!" but people looking for said pairings don't have to filter out a dozen results where it's not the focus.

AO3 needs a ground up rebuild of how it tags, segregates, and searches for works. It is functionally useless right now. Even the pit of voles makes it easier to find or exclude fics from searches.

Amen. I just want to not see B/C when I'm looking for A/B fic. I don't want to get rid of B&C! Their friendship is important to me.

(I haven't seen references to the "pit of voles" in a while -- ahh, nostalgia.)

But I agree wholeheartedly. The AO3 search function is desperately in need of an overhaul.

I think I've commented about this before, but a really simple fix that would be a great help would be to switch the ratings filters from radial buttons to check boxes. Sometimes I want to read anything but smut, so I have to run three separate searches on "Teen and Up," "Not Rated," and "General Audiences." That's such a dumb waste of time when being able to search for multiple ratings at once should be an obvious given.

Oh god, this. If people keep on treating and insisting that a pairing is practically canon, then no thanks.
