(Anonymous) 2017-04-09 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)Like another example I can think of "Genos cries tears of oil" is ridiculously common in fandom. There's no evidence for it in the comic or anime. There is one mention in a companion guide that "Genos' tears are a special oil to lubricate and protect his oculars" or something similar, so it actually is a very grey area, but you know probably 99% of the people talking about Genos crying oil tears didn't read the guide, they found out because everyone knows that 'fact' and it doesn't really register that he's never actually cried oil in the canon.
If you're lucky, you like the idea of Genos crying oil and it becoming accepted as canon-canon is harmless. If you hate the idea and want to point out that it's just as logical to think he might not be able to ooze out tears at all if that wasn't specifically built in, then good luck arguing when 'everyone' knows it's canon he cries oil. And when that happens it's hard to really want to stay in fandom where you resent the fanon.
