wow same. I never thought of it like this but it's true. tumblr is the absolute worst for this.

Yeah, it's like you keep seeing all these posts about his blue shirt and you keep looking and thinking that no, his shirt is pink/red, and you ask people outside of fandom what color the shirt is and they say pink/red, but you start feeling kind of crazy because everyone else in fandom keeps insisting that it's blue. It's just weird and awkward and unpleasant, even if it's not as flat out awful as some of the stuff.

...What kind of gaslighting fuckery? Why are people doing that?

The only thing I can figure is people see a piece of fanon more than they see the canon? I mean an actual common one is "Jasper tortured Lapis to get information from her on homeworld." And there's... nothing in the show at all that would suggest this and it's honestly probably darker than the canon would go but I see it pop up all the time in discussions.

That makes sense....it would be really kind of fucked up if people were doing it on purpose.

I think it's more The Mandela Effect than deliberate gaslighting, but if there's too much of it, it starts feeling very gaslighty. It seems like the tumblr format is particularly bad for that? You get a dozen people posting individual posts about a 'fact' and it feels a lot more intense that one message board thread, even with a dozen people in the thread agreeing with the fake fact.

Like another example I can think of "Genos cries tears of oil" is ridiculously common in fandom. There's no evidence for it in the comic or anime. There is one mention in a companion guide that "Genos' tears are a special oil to lubricate and protect his oculars" or something similar, so it actually is a very grey area, but you know probably 99% of the people talking about Genos crying oil tears didn't read the guide, they found out because everyone knows that 'fact' and it doesn't really register that he's never actually cried oil in the canon.

If you're lucky, you like the idea of Genos crying oil and it becoming accepted as canon-canon is harmless. If you hate the idea and want to point out that it's just as logical to think he might not be able to ooze out tears at all if that wasn't specifically built in, then good luck arguing when 'everyone' knows it's canon he cries oil. And when that happens it's hard to really want to stay in fandom where you resent the fanon.
