My favorite fic, if done right. The unfortunate thing is that the majority of them, especially back in the early internet fandom days, where horrible writing and characterization. It was the worst of the worst. So over the top and poorly written and ridiculous. And honestly a lot of it tends to be that way still. So a lot of people associate that with "whump" (I definitely associate the word "whump" with that horrible type of fic, from my experience in early LJ fandom days).

yeah this is true, though Poe's Law applies to pretty much all kinds of fanfiction. But there's something about whump and fluff that make it really, really easy to just dramatically mischaracterize people to make it more sappy.
