Re: Health and fitness thread

I started boxing class last week and just went to my second one!! I've done various martial arts off and on since I was a child, even on and off through adulthood. But this is my first time doing boxing, and the first art I've taken in over a year. I'm way out of shape and my punches have never been very good, so this is different and nice. But oh man, I really feel the workout, it's so hard! Absolute rivers of sweat, so sore the next day even breathing hurts, omg.

That's awesome! I keep thinking I'd like to try some sort of boxing or kickboxing (or even just a self-defense) class, but I'm still getting used to just *going* to the gym. Not feeling the idea of classes yet.

ayrt

I get what you mean, and I have the trouble that I'm incredibly shy and low motivation. If I can get into a pattern of going to the gym, it's okay for awhile and I can even go a couple times a week, but it takes mental energy for me to even try a new machine or piece of equipment. So classes especially are always really hard to start.

But on the other hand, it's really cool to be learning a skill rather than just mindlessly running/lifting. That's more motivating, I think, to say you have a hobby of some kind and are developing the ability to do an actual thing. When I get in a good groove with a martial arts class, I'm more motivated to go to the gym because I'm thinking about how to make myself stronger/faster/better stamina for the class I'm taking, so it's double motivation.
