not OP

Sheith would definitely be a harder hit than Kallura, but it has next to no chance of becoming canon, and I say this as a hardcore Sheith shipper. First there is the age difference (the writers made it pretty clear that they consider Shiro to be an adult while the rest of the paladins are still kids), then there is the whole "brotherly" relationship they have. The first issue could be dealt with if there is a timeskip during the show, but the second one is a bigger problem. The staff even referred to Shiro recently as having sort of a "big brother" thing with Keith.

Plus, you know, it's a gay ship. The chances of two male leads ending up in a romantic relationship in a kids' cartoon about a giant robot are like 0.00001%.

A week ago a kids' cartoon about giant robots ended with the two female leads married and raising a son. Sometimes good things happen.

Are you talking about Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans? Because that's not exactly a "kids' cartoon"... It's literally rated 17+.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-11 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Got a souce for that? As far as I know Gundam has always been an all-ages show. That's why parents were complaining in S1 about certain scenes.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-11 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I was just going off the info given at MAL, but I guess that's not a credible course. Another site gives me 14+, but that could have been for S1.

Anyway, there is lots of blood and violence and people dying left and right in that show, plus it's anime. Voltron can get pretty violent sometimes, but it's a western cartoon for kids 7+, I don't think they're comparable.

Yeah that... that would be a good thing if they hadn't been terrible characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-11 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
>positive queer representation in one of the most important anime franchises, the first homosexual couple in a Gundam show, doesn't count because I hate the characters
Yeah, no. Fuck off. I swear to god, you Tekketsu haters are the most annoying, inmature and pety hatebase I've come across in a long time. Don't like the show? Good for you, but most people enjoyed it and cherish those characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-11 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
>me, a queer, being told what to consider positive queer representation
>two popular, attractive female characters that guys can wank to the thought of being together
>only together at all because practically everyone else is dead
>first canon gay male character loses love interest and ends up alone because only wlw can have happy endings together, as long as they're hot and it's been shoved at you the whole series that they really prefer men

But yeah. I just "don't like the characters."

(Anonymous) 2017-04-11 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So only ugly women are allowed to be together because otherwise is "not real representation, only pandering"? In anime, where everyone is gorgeous? And then you complain about Yamagi not ending up with Shino, when that pairing had a fujoshi fanbase ten times the size of the few straight guys fapping to Kudelia and Atra, a pairing no one gave a shit about? What in the flying fuck I'm reading. You're projecting your issues so hard here is not even funny. Also first canon gay Gundam character is Guin, not Yamagi.

I still can't believe this happened. I've been shipping Kudelia/Atra since early in season one, but never in a million years did I expect them to actually substantiate it.

Korrasami being a thing imo raises the chances of a gay ship being a thing imo at least somewhat. (But I agree it won't be Shiro because other reasons. I do think Shallura is reasonably likely? I'm surprised people seem to think Kallura is more likely tbh)

Kallura was canon in all previous Voltron series, so that's why people think it's the most likely, and they got some scenes with romantic vibes in S2 (the floating together in space, the hug). Plus Allura was confirmed recently to be a teenager like Keith, while Shiro is around 25. They most likely won't be pairing Shiro off with any of the teens, so they'll either leave him single or give him a gf/bf outside of the team.

I didn't get romantic vibes from either of those scenes, but ymmv I guess. I don't get romantic vibes with anyone except Hunk/Shay and maybe Shiro/Allura (again, ymmv).

Do you know where it was confirmed he's "around 25"? The most I've heard is that he's "in his 20s" and I don't think 25 makes a lot of sense. I thought he and Keith were at the Garrison together at some point? Though now that I think about it I'm not sure if that's their confirmed history or if their actual history has not been divulged.

The "Kallura was canon in previous series" argument falls very flat to me. Keith is a very different character both in terms of personality and role on the team than in previous incarnations.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-11 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, Allura's very different too. I don't know that the change in their personalities makes it less likely that Keith/Allura will become canon. If I'm going off just what I see in canon, Shiro and Allura had some nice moments scattered throughout both seasons, but Keith and Allura had an actual story arc that played out over several episodes, was worked into their character development (well, Allura's more than Keith's) and seemed to be a setup for a future... something. It's not romantic yet, but I can see it eventually building into something that might be.

Shippy vibes are a case of YMMV obviously, but Allura blushing when she bounced out of Keith carrying her bridal style definitely caused a "Hmm" reaction in me, and I don't even ship it.

She blushed? idk. I'm rewatching the series so I'll see when I get to that ep. I'd blush too

I thought that mini-arc was about Allura's character development and team cohesion but I guess we'll see.

There is an infamous video where the producers and main writer of VLD were asked about the ages of the paladins, and they said the "safe zone" for Shiro was 25, while the other paladins are in their "late teens", except for Pidge who is 14-15. That video is what caused the whole age drama in fandom.

Recently, Allura was referred to as a teenager during interviews with the producers and her VA at Wondercon, which caused a massive freak-out among Shallura shippers on tumblr and twitter, especially those of them who are anti-Shaladin ships, since it means Shallura is a teen/adult pairing and no longer "pure". It basically put Shallura in the same situation as Sheith.

Hm, yeah I haven't seen that vid, thanks for the info.

It's weird to me to think of Allura as a teen because she doesn't really act like one, to me? She seems more mature than the paladins - though that could be at least in part because of her upbringing, knowing she'd have a lot of responsibility, and probably already having it even as a teen.

Shiro and Allura have a very equal dynamic to me so it's just weird to me to think of him being so much older. Meh. (I'll probably keep shipping it but yeah it probably won't be canon)

(Anonymous) 2017-04-11 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be very surprised if they end up having a same sex romance between any of the main characters, especially a gay one, which unfortunately is still less acceptable in US media than lesbian ones. The Voltron crew have never actually promised queer romance in their show, in spite of some people taking it for granted as a given because of their connection to Korra. I think at most we'll get secondary characters who are gay. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Keith/Allura has been THE Voltron OTP for decades, and post-season 2 the cast and crew have been dropping hints pointing towards it that I don't remember them doing for Shiro/Allura. I do think those two are the most likely to become canon, because straight relationships always go down easier. But if I had to put my money on only one of them, it would be Keith/Allura.

You're right about M/M being more taboo than F/F, sadly. And no, I am not saying I think a queer relationship is likely, but it's somewhat /more/ likely than it used to be. I still think the most likely ship is Shallura (well, and Hunay) but I agree it's likely Allura will end up with someone and that will be The Ship.
