35. I really have never been afraid of a fandom quite like the "Twilight" fandom. Weirded out? Sure. Icked out? Yep. Bored out? Many. But actually afraid that if I said something bad about Bella in the presense of a rabid fan, they'd pull my hair from its roots or scratch my eyes out.

Why are so many girls obsessed with this series?

I am in the middle of reading the first book and Bella is one of the most passive aggressive fictional characters that I have ever read. And she's a good guy. That's what kills me. If she were an anti-hero or an out and out villian, I wouldn't mind. I love messed up characters. I read Palahnuik and Charlie Huston simply because I knew I will get some of the most damaged characters set to print. But, again, Bella, is written to be a white hat. So, what does that say about her fandom?

77. Yeah, bring on the Locke love. He and Ben are the main reasons why I stick with the show. They are the mystery. Weird stuff happens when Locke is around. Strange enough, anyone who is paired with Locke instantly becomes 10x as interesting.

Miles with Jack = dull
Miles with Locke = A grenade in the mouth excitement

Sawyer with Kate X Jack = Romantic boredom
Sawyer with Locke = Crazy Barracks shootout followed by Smokey cameo.

Hurley with the other survivors = I found a van...wow.
Hurley with Locke = I found a cabin that moves on its own and is run by a powerful mysterious force.

See a pattern?

In the end, because he had such a messed up life up to the Island, I hope Locke ends up being the hero of the story. But I've got the feeling that the whole cabin thing with Christian and Ben saying, "You are the chosen one," is a set up for Locke to be a sacrifice of some sort.

Your comment is just a big fat generalized version of what every reasonable person thinks when they decide against entering Twilight fandom. xD As a girl, I don't get the flight from reality insanity that takes place in the fandom, either. But then, in general I don't think it's the best thing I've ever read, so maybe it's the reading level of the majority of fans. *shot*

Wow, I think you broke my irony-meter with that statement of yours.

Actually, the majority of the Twilight fandom dislikes Bella. She's pretty stupid, I think we all agree on that. Say something bad about Edward, on the other hand, and you will be met with certain death.

The only appeal the series holds to me personally is Jacob Black. Stephenie Meyer can't write for shit, but she did manage to make a really awesome character with Jake. But for MOST of the fans, I'm pretty sure it's Edward Cullen and how he is ~liek omg totally the perfect guy!11!!!11~

FACT. I've gotten into Bella conversations with a few fans, and they all reacted the same way. I was a little afraid for my life. The ones I talked to all took any criticism of her so personally. I just don't understand how you could see her as a sympathetic character. I really, really don't.

This series legit scares and confuses me. Yikes.

Agreed, I tried a perfectly reasonable argument with one the other day and was accused of in seconds of attacking the person's own character when all I asked was a reason to NOT believe Bella was a Mary Sue. It was incredible - and a little scary.

And there are some things about the character that just basically can't be argued or debated. But they will try. And they do get really really heated! I usually have to just walk away, because they can't concede even the littlest point!

I recently finished reading the series and decided to peruse the author's website to see what she had to say about them. In one place she had "What does Bella look like? (http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/twilight_faq.html#bella)" in the FAQ. She said she'd deliberately been vague about it, so that the reader could imagine themselves in Bella's place. (Hence the lack of male fans of the series, I imagine.)

And then, goes on to describe HER vision of Bella. WHICH LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HER. I actually found it very creepy. Who wants to bet that the ~dream~ that started it all was her with a vampire?

Point being: Mary Sue characters are appealing for people who want to be... Mary Sue. Which is a huge chunk of girls between the age of 13-25, I think.
