.. Really? You don't see anything racist about not shipping a pairing because of the color of one of the characters' skin?

Well, yes and no? Disliking a character or a plot simply because of a characters skin colour would be pretty uncool, there's no point in arguing that.

But I don't feel that the secret is worded quite that way. The secretmaker likes both of the characters involved - as characters and as individuals she/he appreciates them both. So that's all cool. However, shipping in this context is being spoken of as heavily sexual - this person obviously likes to fantasize or whatever about the pairings they ship. And, well, obviously they don't find hairy men/darker skin attractive.

They obviously feel bad about it, they realise how lousy it sounds. But it's still the truth - secretmaker likes Mohinder, but doesn't find him attractive because of how he looks. This could just as easily be flipped around to 'I don't find americans attractive' or whatever other nationality or whatever you wanna apply. I think that's just the way it is sometimes, you know? Everyone has preferences, and as long as sexual attraction =/= respect or regard for personality and individual, it doesn't strike me as outrageously racist.

ALSO, that was probably explained atrociously, hahaha. But hopefully you see what I'm trying to ramble? I'm sorry if that was muddled, I'm totally wiped XD

[identity profile] cookie-simone.livejournal.com 2008-05-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I do see what you're saying here. In this case not liking darker skin would be the same as not liking guys who have red hair. That's simply not his or her "type". However, this person has admitted to finding him attractive, so I don't see what the problem is. If you think that he's hot, why would you care about the color of his skin? And if you see the sexual tension and enjoy the dynamic, why would such a tiny thing keep you from shipping a pairing? I don't know, maybe I just can't understand because I tend to ship pairings based on their interaction and the dynamic between them, and don't really care much about the way that they look. You know, as long as they're not really fug.

Well yeah, I have to admit I'm much the same as you in that regard. I'm really more for dynamics and interaction than the sexual side of shipping. But secretmaker likes that sexual side, and all power to 'em. Different strokes, etc.!

But huh, you're right, it is a little funny that they should find him hot but still not be able to ship it. But I guess he's just... not hot enough? Hahaha. I dunno though, yeah, I don't think this secret is anywhere near as intensely offensive as it might initially seem. I can't strictly relate to it, but I think I can understand what the secretmaker is getting at. It's not so very terrible, even if you'd wanna hang your head in a shame a little while admitting it (hence secret, I suppose!).

o hay

i see someone hasn't learned the concept of 'sexual racism' and how it's linked to colonialism.

Sounds to me like you're right, I don't know what that means. But hey, I'm willing to be wrong you know - if you really think I'm missing something then explain away!

edit; actually wait no, that's wildly presumptuous. I'll look it up |B

I dunno, I've only just done some very quick reading obviously, I've got other things I'm supposed to be doing right now as well. But I dunno, this is just one person deciding what part of a superhero show they want to fap over (um, no disrespect intended secretmaker). I can see what you're getting at, but I think in this context it's really still fairly harmless. Though I suppose the counterargument to that would be if they use these values here they'll use them in all aspects of life yadda yadda yadda. Hm...

But yeah, it should be fairly obvious that I'm not really up on the intricacies of this. Hrm.

whether one person's thoughts are harmless in the grand scheme of things or not, that doesn't make it any less racist. racism is more than just blatant harmful acts, it manifests in a hell of a lot of common ways that most people are conditioned not to see, because it's still acceptable. and it is often these "minor" and "harmless" opinions that society encourages us to have that are most harmful in the long run, because it is so common and not seen as racism. what people find sexually attractive is not something that exists inside a bubble, free from influences. if we existed in a society where racism was a thing of the past, "she just isn't attracted to x" might be a valid excuse, but until we reach that place in society, there is way more to it than that.

[identity profile] weyrdchic.livejournal.com 2008-05-19 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit I'm not familiar with the term - and I think the secret was worded atrociously, and does reveal latent racism, though at least she's aware of it - but if darker people aren't your type then they're not, right? I've rarely schlicked to blonde blue-eyed characters because 90% of the time that coloring doesn't it for me, but I wouldn't say it's because I "wish they weren't Aryan" or anything. (White, Jewish, and dark of hair and eyes for the record.)

[identity profile] weyrdchic.livejournal.com 2008-05-19 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
*adding* And that doesn't make me like them any less as characters, etc. etc.

Everyone has preferences, and as long as sexual attraction =/= respect or regard for personality and individual, it doesn't strike me as outrageously racist.

I see where you're coming from. You can control your behavior, you can control the way you treat others, but you can't control what turns you on.
