Then the Rick and Morty fandom came along and made it all so much worse.

I don't think Doc thinks of Marty as his son, but I 100% think the film supports the view that Marty thinks of Doc as the dad he wishes he had.

In 1955, Marty essentially uses the advice he's gotten from Doc to make George into a more confident person.
