I remember that part so well! It really stuck with me because, up until then, all the books I'd read had parents who didn't fight. I remember Ramona feeling the same way I felt when my parents fought. Wasn't there also a chapter where the dad gifts Ramona and Beezus erasers and there's an acknowledgement that the family doesn't have much money to spare? I also remember them washing their hair in the sink to save money.

There's also the incident where they eat cow tongue (super cheap cut of meat) for dinner and the girls freak out. IIRC their mom says something about it being on sale or something to that effect.

Since I just finished this yesterday, I can confirm the struggles with money are present throughout the series and get particularly rough in Ramona and her Father. Like everything else it's done realistically which is so refreshing when you're used to "poor" characters on TV with huge houses and $700 t-shirts.
