I'm one year two with one of mine. *high five*

Is it some kind of mammoth epic? Maybe you should consider filing off the names so you can submit it for publication.

Honestly I don't think that would be possible. A lot of features specific to the series can't be removed.

I've been writing one of mine for 7 1/2 years. I don't regret starting it, but I will finish it, but life has interfered in such a large way on so many occasions leading to lengthy hiatuses. Now I'm ready to move on but it's still my fanfic baby, and I can't abandon it. It's difficult, because like most people, I have limited free time and would prefer to put my efforts into something publishable, but I feel guilty every time I neglect the fanfic for more than a few weeks without glancing at it. Lots of conflicting emotions going on, is what I'm saying.

Oh well. It *is* almost done. I think I'm going to marathon through the end sometime soon, get it off my plate, and get down to the business of writing an actual novel.

(There's also a fanfic that I long ago said I would write. Yeah, that one is not happening.)

I feel so attacked and called out rn

*hides fanfics that have been abandoned for 10 years*

Hey, no time like the present to get re-started on them!

I can relate. I've been world-building and writing bits for a story that dates back to 2006, and I haven't even gotten very far with it. Currently, I have 37 drafts of the first chapter that are all completely different. I can almost never write anything, so I'll occasionally spend some free time just tweaking the basic outline or working a character's bio (some of their motives have actually changed over the years). I created a sort of bible for it over the winter that I work on from time to time.

I can understand. I'm on year nine with one of mine, with no update in the last four years. As much as I love it, I can't bring myself to move it along. It's frustrating.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe find someone to go through it with you. Even go through reviews and ask some of your reviewers to help.

Do you work better with a deadline? Because if you do, you should try the WIP Big Bang (their main site is LJ but they mirror on dreamwidth and have a tumblr). It helped me finish a 10 year old chaptered fic last year. Unfortunately, signs up have closed for this year...but after so long, what's one more year?

If you (or anyone else is interested): http://wipbigbang.livejournal.com/
It doesn't have to be finishing a super old fic either, can be something newer.

I had a few that I took long (6+ years) breaks from, and a novel length one that I just finished after nearly 9 years. Sometimes writing them felt like a slog, but I decided that any idea that hung around in my head for so long wasn't just going to fade away, so I kepy going when I had time.

And DAMN, it felt really good to have them DONE.

Then there are other stories that I've lost interest in, and that's okay too.

I'm going to pretend you're the Mirror of Maybe author still plugging away even though that's a story that's been abandoned for a decade, let alone started.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well no, but if you can contact them then you should! Maybe they're belaboring how to continue!

I'm a decade going on one of mine, and definitely over a decade on another (to be fair, I stopped that one and have begun a rewrite of it). It doesn't bother me much, though I do feel bad about leaving readers hanging. My fanfics are the things I do in my spare time, and in recent years spare time (and the good health to be able to do anything with said spare time) has gotten slimmer and slimmer.

I think I know who you are OP (am sure it can apply to absolutely anyone) if it is you who updates a fic once a year (and updated with two chapters within few months recently which is abnormal). Does not really matter if it is you or not - writing is hard work and never force yourself when it does not give you even a bit of pleasure of satisfaction. I am mostly a reader so can tell you that plenty of fanfics I followed took ages and it did not matter to me how long was the chapter or reasons for why it took long (unless there was something strange going on like an internet novel author who finished it but did not upload last chapter and vanished off the face of planet - not meaning he just chose not to end it - he disappeared as a person and no, was not an alias).

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah nah I didn't update within a few months. I think I did two chapters last year. Though tell me, is this a person who's been on FS a few times before?

I have so many ideas with the character. But writing in order, putting things where they need to go, is very hard.

[personal profile] digitalghosts 2017-04-17 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
The fanfic author never was on FS as far as I know nor the disappeared author.

I do have same problem with writing as beginnings and endings and twists are more vivid. Still, best if luck Anon!

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Best of luck to you too!

I had a work in progress since 2002, and eventually decided to discontinue it and recycle ideas from it.

I also have a WIP started in 2010, that I'm re-writing so I can finally finish it. I also have two drabble series in progress (once started in 2013, and one started early last year).

Don't feel bad. We all have a few fics that lie unfinished.
