As far as I can tell, the appeal of Lance is...nothing that actually exists in canon. The popular fanon is that he's secretly the best pilot and shot and speaks Spanish and is the funniest, cleverest, most woobie person to ever exist.

I was literally just talking about this with a friend earlier today. Voltron fandom's favorite character is an OOC version of Lance that has little if anything to do with the character we see in canon.
