Rogue One

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Finally got around to watching the movie. It was way better than I feared it might be. I didn't find the Tarkin cgi distracting at all, and if I hadn't been told he was cg I would have just thought they'd done the same as Mon Mothma and found a great cosplay.

I will say that it is super obvious what is Edwards original cut of the movie and what the Studio added. It is clear the space battles and final climax was meant to be the Eadu and they cut and added stuff to make it a pit stop and put Scariff in as the reshoot finale. Basically whenever it is in the dark or rain or the characters are reacting to something cool offscreen then that is Edwards. If it is in sunlight or it is the characters doing something cool and the cool thing being shown on screen itself, that is the studio reshoot.

I went into Rogue One really worried because of all the reshoot rumours, and I really enjoyed it. Really glad they decided to go with such a dark ending.

What do you mean about the Edwards original cut? Do you mean his original proposal? They did change the ending around, but I'm pretty sure it was always on Scarif. It was in all the trailers after all.

I thought the Tarkin CGI was really well done. I actually really like the actor they got to play him, even though we never saw his face. But the Leia bit at the end looked bad and wrong. They shouldn't be trying to make another actress look like her, they should've just recast her outright. It's not like we won't recognise the hairstyle.

I gotta be honest, if it hadn't been for all the fuss kicked up over the Leia cg too then I'd have believed it was some found footage of young Carrie from ANH. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I did not spot the "obvious" CGI on the screen. Well, the tentacle beast looked fake as shit and ripped off from American Dad's Majestic, but apart from that it was okay.

ayrt

Huh. Because to me she didn't really look CGI (like Tarkin did) but more like they'd stuck a fake Leia head on someone else's body. Like a Bratz doll or something. It just look weird to me.

I think the tentacle beast was pretty silly and pointless. I've decided it's because they wanted to bring home that Saw was as extreme as he was being portrayed but they didn't want to have him "kick the puppy".

You know, where Bodhi was the movie's puppy. And everybody knows that the bad guy is irredeemably evil if he kicks a puppy so they couldn't have Saw be the one to do the interrogation personally and have the audience believe he was still a good (more or less) guy.

Personally, I think they could've done just as well with a sort of, "this is [name], his species was nearly wiped out and the rest enslaved by the Empire. He's not a very forgiving [alien] and if you are truly an Imperial, he will make certain of it." And then have Bodhi taken away for interrogation with some screaming in the background. Saw still isn't kicking the puppy personally, there's no stupid tentacle beast CGI, and we have plenty of reason for why Bodhi is so shell-shocked later on.

I honestly didn't mind Leia, either. I mean, obviously it was CGI - 100% of the movie's audience is going to know that, so it's not going to convince people otherwise no matter how good it is. It looked like her, it was obviously her, idk. It was only like a five second clip so it really wasn't long enough to be distracting for me.

Yeah, I didn't even realize Tarkin was CGI till I saw stuff about it afterward.

That said, I do feel like we could've done just as well without CGI Leia. We could've seen her in silhouette and we would've known who it is and nothing would have been lost.

I was the opposite, finding Takin too Uncanny Valley, while I thought the Leia shot went by so fast that it didn't really matter (although I was actually surprised she turned around and we saw her face at all - it's not like we wouldn't have understood who that was).

I was fine with the CGI dude I just found it noticeable but not in a way that pulled me out. Either way I had fun watching the movie and while it's weird to say I was happy that they went with an 'everyone dies' ending as opposed to giving one or two of them a happy ending.

I didn't like the CGI humans but I didn't think it was badly done. It just unsettled me :(

Honestly I didn't like the film all that much, as you said, the editing? Super obvious. Most of the characters were one dimensional. And you knew they were all gonna die so....

I think that's what bugged me about this movie. You learned so much about the characters and they all died, so what was the point?

I love this movie so much. Everything about it. The CGI didn't bother me at all. Every bit of Rogue One was perfect to me.

Yeah...Leah's CGI cameo at the end was way more distracting...in the whole movie, I saw fewer 'tells' from Tarkin than I did from Leah in her short scene.

The look of CGI Tarkin didn't bother me but I couldn't grove how his voice actor just didn't sound right. Like, all the great impressionists in the world and they couldn't have found one guy to dub the lines while giving the body double role to anybody who fit the suit?

I just watched it for the first time, too. The CGI characters were excellently executed... but they still creeped me out. It looked like an amazing computer game, but triggered that Uncanny Valley effect. Especially Tarkin. :(

Re: Rogue One

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. The animation was amazing on Tarkin, but they spent too much time focusing on him and really triggered all those "something's not quite right with this" alarms after a while. A recast would have been better if they were going to spend that much time with Tarkin.

Leia... didn't need to be there. Even if they somehow figured out how to time travel and have 19-year-old Carrie Fisher play the part, it still would have felt forced. Adding CGI Leia to the mix pushed it over the edge and pulled me right out of the story.
