Ranma fandom was really great, especially on the mailing lists. A lot of the fic was way out there AUs too, like Cyberpunk and epic fantasy stuff, but none of the usual coffeeshop or American Highschool student (except for the Daria crossovers) AU stuff. I think it worked because Takahashi gave the characters strong and distinct, but relatively straightforward, personalities as the starting point so it was really hard to get characterization wrong when plugging them into an alternate setting. The characters had relatively timeless character tropes.

The SailorRanmAngelion (it was the cartoon SuperWhoLock) stuff was always pretty fun too.

There were Ranma/Daria crossovers?!

Many. There was an entire archive site devoted to them. It is gone now, went dark some time in '03.

Too bad I missed them. I love both series.

Oh man, this takes me back. The very first fanfic I ever wrote was actually a Ranma/Evangelion crossover.

Was it the one where Gendo fell down one of the infinity escalators and an adult Ranma took over the Misato role? That one was hilarious.

Sadly, no. It was way weirder than that. It was a series of oneshots where the characters all fell into really improbable springs.
Like one where Shinji was freaking out over the LCL because he had fallen into the Spring of the Drowned Ox Carrying an Eel and a Crane (and the plug didn't have space for it), to the final one where Misato had fallen into the Spring of the Drowned Kaworu and was actually the Seventeenth Angel.

They're really not very good - I was not a particularly good writer at the time.
You're actually tempting me to look up the one you mentioned, though, because it sounds entertaining! Would you happen to have a link?

I had it in my favorites folder on ff.net but it is no longer there. Seems the author has deleted their account. Sorry.
