Can you explain why Voltron's a good show? I've been kinding of wanting to watch it, but still on the fence about it.

I mean, it's all really super subjective. It helps that I really enjoy Western cartoons in the vein of "aimed at kids but can be appealing to adults" (AtLA/LoK, SU, MLP) and that I am generally easy to please.

It's a reboot of an older show that I never watched (it existed before I was born, and I only have watched little snippets of it since watching VLD). So people who have watched the older version probably approach VLD really differently.

It's also got a fandom that's very divided on certain things and I kinda think that the things about the show that appeal to some people are not going to be the same as those that appeal to others.

Personally, I enjoy the art and animation (they do CGI animation for the machines without making them look really different from the rest of the animation; I think they did a really good job with that) and the characters. The characters are somewhat tropey in ways that I enjoy, but each one is also unique and goes deeper than just "lol this trope". It takes a little bit of getting into the show for that to become apparent for all of them though.

I also really love having a female paladin who isn't super girly or has a big deal made of her gender. Pidge is one of the reasons I wanted to watch this show, and she did not disappoint. They also rebooted Allura (literally a princess) in a way that expands her character and makes her much more than a prop.

I also love shipping, and you can ship pretty much anything since so far nothing is even close to canon (except arguably Hunk, one of the paladins, with this one alien girl is sort of implied). I ship one thing that will 99% never be canon, another that might but no idea yet really, and the third is the aforementioned Hunk x alien which may never get past the "implied" stage. The first is Klance, my OTP in this fandom, which hits all my buttons and is super fun but not everyone likes it. There's a lot fanwork for it but I think there are also a lot for some of the conflicting ships if that's more your bag. (Stay away from fandom, both in general and for the conflicting ships. I have heard Bad Things. I just read fic and look at art and stay the hell off Tumblr tags.)

Also, cool mechas and monsters and space and aliens and alien tech and stuff :D

As a note, the pilot ep didn't really impress me, but pilots often don't IME. A couple of the characters I didn't really get into until close to the end of S2, either (but it's fun to go back now with my new views of them in mind; I'm doing a re-watch).

If you have Netflix it doesn't hurt to check out a few eps! The pilot pretty much just sets up the general plot without getting too much into the characters. It really picks up maybe halfway through S1 imo.
