I am getting a pet hedgehog!

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
After being on a waiting list for almost a year, my family is finally getting a baby hedgehog! We get to pick him up in a few weeks, but in the meantime, I've been getting supplies so we'll be completely ready for him. I've also read practically every legitimate hedgehog care guide online, so I understand some of their habits, quirks, and preferences.

Has anyone on here ever had one? If so, what advice would you give a new hedgehog owner?

PS: We did not name him after any fictional hedgehog character. ;)

I'll try to! Will probably make an album of some sort once he's here!

Waiting list?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I apologize, I don't have any information about raising hedgehogs but this caught my eye.

There's a waiting list? And for a whole year? Is this the norm for hedgehog ownership? I know it's sometimes the norm for the very exotic pets but hedgies seem pretty well domesticated and integrated into the whole "domestic pet" scene, it's not exactly the same to me as getting like a Russian White Domesticated Fox or something. Or...is it?

Also: Congratulations! Sounds super fun. :) Are they hard to take care of? Say...compared to a dog or a cat?

AYRT late reply, but where I live, you can only get hedgehogs from a breeder, and there are very few of them. There's a high-ish demand, but a low supply.

They are kind of like taking care of a rodent pet (smaller living space, nocturnal, runs on a wheel), but they eat cat food, fruit, meat, etc. They like being held more than most rodents do, so you can take it from its enclosure and just sit with it while you're watching TV in the evening. You can litter train them, but that's about it; they are not as smart as a cat or dog.

D'aaaw, congrats! Hedgehogs are so awesome. I had one named Spike (yes, I know, very original, but at least it wasn't Sonic) when I was a kid. A friend of my dad's gave him to us when she couldn't take care of him anymore. He was a little shy at first, but he warmed up to us quickly after being hand-fed mealworms a few times. Luckily I already raised mealworms for the frogs and lizards I kept as well, so I always had a ready supply for him to munch on. He made the most adorable little wuffly-hissy noises all the time and he liked to lick and nibble on our hands. He hated baths, though, which I'm told is unusual for a hedgie. He really liked to hide in small spaces, so maybe consider keeping some little "houses" in his cage/pen for him to snuggle up in so he can feel all safe and cozy and whatnot. Make sure he gets plenty of exercise too; we used to let Spike wander the house for a while a couple times a day (under supervision, of course) and he'd follow us around and dart about chasing the dogs and getting into things (they really are pretty fast!). Man, I still miss that little guy. He was such a little sweetie.

Anyway, I'd say that the most important thing of all to remember about hedgehogs is that they can never be buggered at all.

Thank you for the advice! I have been searching for good little houses for the enclosure (there's one that looks like a tree stump that looks really cute!), but I didn't know it was ok to let them walk around the house (supervised, as you said)! We only have one small, quiet senior dog, so I hope they can end up being friends. She misses the hamster (passed from old age) and I think she'd like being able to play with an animal not enclosed in a running ball.
