Aw, I find the 90s-ness of it to be one of the appealing factors, haha. That hair!

I'll give you the lack of chemistry, though, for sure.

Who said anything about chemistry? I agree with OP that RP is a bit flat, but his chemistry with both the women was fun to watch IMO.

Wow, all the elements you dislike about this movie are an integral part of why I like it.

I don't find it overly dated, because IMO it already feels slightly unreal and anachronistic due to having its roots in an 18th century novel. But to the degree that it does feel 90's, I like that about it.

And I can't really imagine it without RP and SMG. I thought they delivered exactly what was needed for their roles, and their chemistry was exactly as twisted and intense as was needed.

Funny, this is the only thing I've ever liked Sarah Michelle Gellar in. In everything else she's ever done she annoys the crap out of me.

If you're just looking for another version of this movie:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094947/

It IS the remake.

They are making a TV show?

*googles*

Huh, it says the reboot is dead in the water. Shame, the fandom's hypothetical descent into wank would have been glorious.

Anyway, the movie was a product of its time. And iirc the 90's version was also a remake of the original movie.

Or you could go with any of a myriad of other versions.

All based on the novel Les Liaisons dangereuses - like Dangerous Liaisons (Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, and also Keanu Reeves, which, yeah, he didn't fit) or Valmont (Colin Firth, Annette Banning, and Meg Tilly), plus there's a French one set in the 50s, a Korean one set in the 18th C., and a Chinese one set in the 30s. Or you could go with a stage version (once upon a time Alan Rickman starred), an opera, a radio version, a ballet, or a TV miniseries.

But let's not forget, there were the direct to video sequels.

All the girls were great in this, pity about Ryan Phillipe.

They are making a new one? Would live that as the 1988 was my favourite but still would see another spin on it due to posh, over-everything architecture and costumes.
