My Mom and I live with her younger sister and her husband (my uncle). It was about 10:30 PM and my aunt came into the living room, opened the front door, picked up a piece of paper, handed it to Mom, closed the door, and went back to her bedroom. Mom started reading it and started crying. I asked what was wrong and she handed me the letter.

It was a note saying that Mom had a warrant for her arrest for tax fraud and to come before a federal judge. Mom has had her credit union help her file her taxes for the past ten years. It wasn't signed by anyone and her name was her middle name then last name when she has officially gone by her first, maiden, and married last name since she was married thirty-two years ago.

I tried looking online, but only pay sites for background checks showed up. Mom had a stroke a few years ago and it affected her memory, so she was getting really upset thinking she forgot something and was going to go to jail. My aunt and uncle have said that if something happens to Mom, they are kicking me (and my therapy cat), out of the house. I am on the autism spectrum and have been diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression. We're been trying to save money and been applying for public housing but we've been on the waiting lists for two years now. Mom only works part time and I have been working with Vocational rehabilitation to find work.

Mom and I were getting really upset. My uncle came in and asked what was wrong. Mom showed him the letter. He said that Mom was going to end up in jail and I was too because I am not taking my medication. The psychologist I was seeing for free under a grant lost funding and it has taken a year to find someone to see me considering I don't have insurance or money but I have only been able to see a therapist, I have to wait until May to see someone who prescribes medication.

He was saying other stuff, but I was freaking out so I didn't hear him. Mom went to my aunt to tell her what was going on. Mom came back to the living room and my uncle grabbed the paper and ripped it up. Mom was crying again and I was having a panic attack. My uncle started laughing and said he made it at work as a prank. My aunt backed him up.

It has been a few hours. Mom finally just got to sleep. I am still shaking a bit and my chest hurts and feels tight. I am still worried that there is a warrant out for her arrest, that he was 'kidding' about it being a prank.

Well I will say it does sound like it was a "prank" because the letter sounds pretty fake but it's also an awful one.

Your Aunt and Uncle sound abusive and I really hope you and your Mom find some housing and can improve your situation. All the best anon.

Just the letter would have been a bad prank from someone with terrible taste and social skills. Going off at your mother with memory issues and saying you're going to jail is just fucking sadistic. It sounds like an abusive situation and I hope you guys a can figure out something better.
The letter sounds fake to me too, if that helps.

At least they're getting better at making up sob stories, but they need to develop a less distinctive writing style if they want to move up to the next level.

JFC. I hope you guys get out of that house soon. Your aunt and uncle sound like nasty pieces of work.
