Favorite houseplant?

I think mine is the jade plant. They're not as flashy as some, but easier to keep alive.

Bamboo, though I can't get one to live more than two years. Bamboo tips?

I have a soft spot for pitcher plants because I had a friend who had a lovely one.

Surprisingly, I do very well with phalaenopsis orchids. They love a sunny south-facing window, weekly watering, and some fertilizer every couple months. I always thought orchids were hard to grow but mine seem to thrive on just a little care!

None for me because I always end up killing my poor houseplants, but my mom loves bamboo.

That I myself have? I have a tiny studio with one window that faces pretty close to another building. The only sunlight we get is really when it reflects off of a glassy neighboring building, so I need plants with strong mental constitution. or whatever.

I have a bonsai tree I like that I was sure I killed but somehow it's still alive, though I found out much later that "bonsai" isn't a type of plant, it's the art of maintaining the plan, so really I have a mini-tree and I have no idea what kind it is. (It was sold as a bonsai tree, though it's got fat deciduous leaves and a pretty thick trunk) I also have an aloe vera plant which I love because ~home medicine~ and I have another one my mom gave me and I forgot what its called. del...phinium? something like that? It's really boring looking.

I want pretty flowering plants, but I think those need more sunlight.

You should look into things that are listed as good "office plants" - generally they're hardy, don't need much care, and can do with minimal sunlight.

Try African violets, maybe? They do okay with indirect light and have pretty flowers.

I have tried so many times to keep a jade plant alive but no go. I love them. They are just so cool. I like aloe plants too - multipurpose plant! - but again, can't keep 'em alive. :(

Spider plants are fun just because they're so easy and the mulitply like mad, so you can have a whole jungle of them in a relatively short time!

My old roommat had spider plants. She had to hang them way up on the ceiling away from anything else, though, because the cat was strangely attracted to them and would always try to get at them if they were near anything she could jump from.

I got a tiny spider plant when we moved house 18 months ago and now I have giant spider plants all over the house. I love it!

I've had a bamboo for a few years now that I am quite fond of!

I stopped watering my plants when I was fired a month ago so my favourites are the ones that aren't dead yet. About half.

Christmas Cactus. They're so easy to keep alive and they bloom gorgeously in the fall/winter. I keep getting tempted by some dark gold blooming ones on ebay.

I have two heart-leaf philodendrons, one wandering jew, two bromeliads, and one...plant of indeterminate classification that are the hardiest goddamn houseplants I ever did see. They have a stronger will to live than I have. I have forgotten to water them for 4+ weeks at a time, multiple times, and they are still growing strong. It is ridiculous.

Currently a teeny little succulent i got the Monstrous Bebe, that she nearly killed, and the orchid I got for Valentines, that i *haven't* killed (never had one last this long).

I'm not really a plant person. I love them until they die. :)

Question about Jade Plants...

(Anonymous) 2017-04-19 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
So I have one, and it stays with me in my north facing room. I think I'm slowly killing it though :(

I over watered my last succulent and it died, and this one just...its leaves are drying up, it seems. I might not be watering it enough? . Sigh. I just want it to live! How often do I water it? The packing says every two days, but the container doesn't have drainage holes and I want to avoid root rot...

Any suggestions on how to care for it? Thanks, OP!/ anyone else who answers!

I'd say poke your finger down in the dirt, if it's dry give it some water, if you feel dampness then wait.

Peace lilies. Someone gifted my mother with a pair when my grandmother died and every time they bloom I think of my grandmother.
