isn't it canon tho that Tolkien Elves consider sex basically a marriage ceremony? That might complicate things a tad.

It depends on what you consider canon. With Tolkien you can pick and choose. It is impossible to say everything is canon because there are so many different versions of the same stories. So most people just pick and choose and ignore the stuff they don't like. Some really hardcore purists do consider that one bit of his writing canon and insist that everyone else should, but those same people wouldn't insist two different versions of the same story were both right. So eh, Tolkien is complicated. Most of the fandom does what it wants.
