I felt bad for some of the people who were flamed over the decisions they made in AU fics over what to do with Ronon and Teyla because...
Forget the fact that Ronon and Teyla are brown. They could be whiter than snow on rice and they would still be people who walk around in leathers, don't have college educations or military service, and basically do not have any kind of history that is even analogous to the kind of past you have to have to get a job at a large corporation. I wouldn't have made them baristas (that was kinda dumb--but I thought it was dumb, more than racist) but I might have made them somebody's martial arts teachers. I just cannot picture them as lawyers, not because they're brown or stupid but because...they do not have a lifestyle or history that's at all like the lifestyle or history of the human SG characters, who do, therefore, fit easily into any present-day AU. OTOH, in a less-technological AU where all the SG people with their military and university training have no place in the world, it would be hard to place, say, Rodney. (And I love Ronon and Teyla in part because they're NOT like the others. The character on SGA I just don't relate to is Elizabeth.)
Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.
And yeah, there actually are a lot of actors who "look" white who aren't. It's actually pretty hard to tell what background a lot of Americans have, from just looking; we are pretty mixed up, and that's one of the great things about parts of America.
