Well, the fact that it's a troll secret (admit it, it's more likely than not) is why I responded like that. It's obviously inflammatory, elitist etc. and I was congratulating said troll for getting such a rise out of everyone who're only there to PROVE THEM WRONG ABOUT WEEABOOS AND COSPLAYING BECAUSE WE TOTALLY CAN'T TAKE SOMEONE ELSE'S OPINION SO WE HAVE TO DEBUNK IT TEEHEE ^_________________^ -- kinda reminds me of a RL version of this that lasted for 40 years (the Mead-Freeman Controversy), XD.

The OP is either butthurt (in the event of it being an ACTUAL secret) or pissing themselves laughing. Either way, it was a brilliant secret and the wank that promptly ensued was beautiful. Like 'waterfall on a misty summer morning' beautiful.

Eh, fair enough. I know how it is when you're a few days behind on the secrets.

Yeah, I'd say it's more likely a troll. I've just got my doubts because I have heard people who are otherwise sane say pretty much the exact same thing and not get the arguments against it at all- so meh, could be either, in the end.

Still, the wank was pretty glorious, though still... I don't get the point of starting wank on purpose, so I still think the OP was being retarded. No big deal on either end, though.

Hah, now I kinda want to know about the Mead-Freeman Controversy. XD

Because it's funny?

This is a huge Social Anthropology thing so I dunno if you'll get it but still. Here's a slightly tipsy explanation.

Basically, the Mead-Freeman controversy was where this woman, Margaret Mead, went to study the Samoans in the 20s - she eventually concluded that the teenagers there had stress free lives and figured that it was not human nature to be stressed out- it was the way that you were brought up / the society that you lived in. This eventually founded the hippies and the free love revolution of the 1960s (She supported the nurture aspect of life rather than the nature- meaning that humans have the agency (free will) to change their lives at will). She was named one of the top three most influential American women of her time.

MEANWHILE, there was this giant jackass named Derek Freeman who was brought up to think that he was some messiah or something by his mother. At first, this guy believed that nuture made more sense than nature in an anthropological sense, so he went to visit the Samoans just as Mead did but 20-35 years after she had. He stayed there for way longer and was eventually elected as a chief there and while he stayed, he learned a ton about the Samoans and eventually decided that Mead was full of shit.

So, what did he do?

Trolled the living fuck out of her theories of course. He basically spent 40 years of his life dedicating it to debunking her theories and although she had died by the time that his first inflammatory book was published, he kept up the feud despite the fact that his 'opponent' was DEAD. Eventually the entire world of Anthropologists shunned him because he had a ton of methodical errors and he kept taking quotes from her book out of context and disregarding the fact that she had been there in a different ERA than he had been, so things had changed over the period of time. She is still largely respected and basically the 'mother' of the hippie / love and peace movement of the 60s.

TL;DR? : Mead decides on one thing - Freeman goes and researches it 20-35 years later and comes to a different conclusion so he dedicates 40 years of his life trying to defame a dead woman. Anthropologists find that he's full of shit and shun him to this very day.

I WILL SO GET A GOOD GRADE ON THIS IF I EVER HAVE TO WRITE AN ESSAY. <3

It is, but it's like a train wreck to me. C-can't help watching, but I go D: at it enough not to want to cause one... still, if people find it fun, most of the time it is other people who're taking things way too seriously who are at fault.

That... is the most fucked up yet AMAZING story I have ever heard. XDDD; Holy crap, man. That guy should win a special award or something. I HOPE YOU GET TO WRITE AN ESSAY ON IT SOMEDAY.

Re: 26

[identity profile] electricalsun.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
But it's HILARIOUS. That's why it's fun to watch. I always argue with people though so I tend not to do it and when it happens and I'm involved, it's usually over one of my ACTUAL secrets. XD;;;

A very special award. A Jackass-of-the-Anthropological-World award.

I THINK I ACTUALLY DO GET TO WRITE AN ESSAY ON SOMETHING LIKE THAT BUT I ALSO HAVE TO INCLUDE MALINOWSKI (BORING AS FUCK MAMA'S BOY WHO IS A CLOSET RACIST) AND TURNBULL (AWESOME GUY WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH SOME RANDOM BLACK MAN AND LIVED WITH THE PYGMIES AND HATED THE IKH WITH A DESPERATE PASSION AND DIED OF AIDS IN LIKE, 94 OR SOMETHING. D:)

................. Oh god, I wish they had a fandom that wasn't full of bitchy anthropologists. I COULD MAKE A SECRET ABOUT THAT XD.

Re: 26

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
It is hilarious sometimes XD NOT THE RANDOM VITRIOL ONES and there are ones that make me go less "... oh humanity, lol" and more "........ D: I have just lost my faith in strangers," but some of the wank is just like... hilariously stupid. IDK I LIKE THE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T ARGUE but try to anyway, and you clearly own their asses but they will never, ever realize this. They hurt me, but god they're funny. XD;

Someone who can make Anthropology into something that's possible to troll in is a goddamn special Jackass, that much is true.

OH MAN, THAT'S PRETTY DAMN COOL- the last part anyway, I'LL HAVE TO LOOK HIM UP I love weird history stuff~ Man my caps habit is random. Uh.

You never know! You could do it anyway. ANTHROPOLOGY IS TOTALLY A FANDOM IF YOU'RE A FAN OF IT?
