George R. R. Martin has a thing for the B&B trope (not surprising; he was also a writer for the live action B&B TV series 30 years back), so she definitely was written to physically resemble a beast type (or at least be considered ugly by their society's standards). Even more so after she gets part of her face eaten by a violent cannibal in the books. Tall, mannish, buck-toothed, freckled, flat chested, straw-like hair, wide jaw, etc. She does differ from the Beast in that she's a very beautiful person inside. If the eyes are considered the windows to the soul, then it makes sense her eyes are also described as beautiful (her only physically attractive feature). Jaime, on the other hand, starts off being beautiful on the outside, but he does some rather beastly things in the name of love, and he's rather bitter about how some things in his life have turned out. It's when he meets Brienne that he starts to change... even though he'll take full advantage of his reputation at times, he definitely matures inside... not to mention he does some bold and meaningful things for Brienne. So in a way, they are both Beauty and the Beast. I could go on and on.

You're right about the show, though... God bless Gwen, she's gorgeous, and no amount of makeup can make her hideous.

Yeah I see what you're saying. I know in the books she's not conventionally attractive but I was also thinking of how she's kind of a great person and the Beast's tale he's a pretty big grump in addition to having the beast form. But I can see the comparison you're making.

Gwen is absolutely too cute though lol. I hope Jaime stops being a dick and we get more scenes of them together.

Omg one of the things that made my feelings on the books tip into loathing was how EVERY PAGE Brienne was on had a mention of how ugly she is. (It certainly felt like every page, anyway.)

YES OKAY I GET IT SHE'S UGLY YOU CAN SHUT UP NOW

Gwendoline Christie is a glorious Amazon, and even though she is way prettier than Brienne is supposed to be, I think the magnificent, subtle job she does at portraying the character's every complex little nuance of personality is a huge part of why tv Brienne is just so gosh darn attractive. The inner beauty of Brienne really shines through in Christie's acting.

Great comment. I loved the dichotomy between Jaime and Brienne and how they evolved together, how she could bring out the good in him in the case of being potentially paired up.
