I don't really see how being white is integral to Barbara's character. Seems like it wouldn't be any weirder than making Jimmy Olsen black in Supergirl, and personally what was weirder to me there was that he wanted to be called James.

Eh, I knew a whole bunch of Jimmies in elementary school, and nearly all of them demanded that people stop calling them Jimmy by the time they were 11.

Yeah, I get why an actual person would want to be called James instead. It's just that this character has existed in popular culture as Jimmy Olsen for so long that it was jarring for him to be called James in this show. And somehow that is more jarring than any change in his appearance for me.
