Martial arts/fighting thread

Anyone do martial arts of any sort? Or are otherwise a fan of the sport, or a fan of the genre in fiction?

I started boxing a few weeks ago and finally ordered training gloves online, because the gym I was at has been threatening to stop letting me borrow their gloves for about a week. :P Which is probably for the best, because those gloves smell horrible and I always feel like I'll contract some kind of disease wearing them, but I'm a cheapskate and joining this gym (it's more of a martial arts studio with unlimited classes) was already really fucking expensive. But I think it's good for me, because I'm enjoying it, and the boxing workouts themselves are both ridiculously intense (who knew it was possible to sweat so much) but still fun, and I feel like I'm learning a good skill (self-defense).

It's not my first "martial art", but I've only done Asian arts before like Aikido and karate. This is a little more interesting because it feels more real. There's zero meditation/spiritual aspect to it, but I also feel like it's prepping me far more to actually be able to defend myself in a real fight.

Regarding the last part, you probably feel that way because it is.

Yeah. Even when I practiced techniques or did "sparring" with partners in the aikido and karate classes, I never had a sense that I was actually becoming a strong fighter who could hold her own in a real fight. Not that aikido and karate inherently are unable to do that, I just think it's how the classes are often taught (more focus on pattern/forms than serious sparring). Also, I hate to say this, but if you go to an MMA or boxing class, you're going to get more people on average who are really serious and strong athletes. I think Asian martial arts classes, you're going to get a higher proportion of nerds, at least in the west.

I think its more of a McDojo problem than a nerd thing.

Is anyone into wuxia films/novels? That is, Chinese martial arts (think Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). I absolutely love it, and recently have been on a quest to find all the wuxia novels and movies I can find. So far, there's nothing that beats Crouching Tiger for me, but I still love the genre overall.

We have a handful of channels (One I remember off the top of my head is ElRey) that play a combination of Wuxia and British gangster movies.

It's always fun to check out on a weekend.

Oh neat! I'd love a channel like that. I don't even have a TV now, so I'm pretty much limited to Netflix and what's on Youtube.
