Yeah. More likely if someone brings up sparkling vampires, the guy might go "oh yeah, I heard that before. Twilight or something, right?" but to reference it all on his own, the odds are pretty damn long unless he's already established as a geeky or fandomy person.

I agree. The secret also says "in their thoughts" and while people will talk about all kinds of things when they come up in conversation, are they likely to think, all alone in their head, without any prompting, "That's like Twilight?"

Maybe the answer is yes, they are... but maybe not. It's something to think about for each character rather than making blanket assumptions based on how popular something was.
