(Anonymous) 2017-04-24 03:31 am (UTC)(link)I haven't read/watched Twilight, but I've still heard of the sparkling, and yet, that doesn't mean that when I'm presented with a love triangle that I'll think "This is like Team Edward vs. Team Jacob!" I know Team Edward vs. Team Jacob was a thing, but it's not occupying an important enough place in my thoughts that it's where my mind goes when I think about a love triangle. Cultural osmosis only goes so far. You learn some of the high points, but it doesn't really permiate your thoughts.
It can be hard to grasp when you're on the inside - I've been there - but everyone knowing some memes and pop culture trivia doesn't mean everyone experiences the thing in the same way the fans do. Someone who jokes "He's dead, Jim!" doesn't necessarilly go around thinking about Star Trek in his or her daily life. I know it sucks not having that validation, but it's true whether you like it or not.
So, I also agree with the OP that it's completely OOC for a lot of characters to be randomly thinking about Twilight if they've never shown an interest it it, or similar media.
