After the First Death by Robert Cormier. It was the first book I ever read in which the good guys do not triumph over the bad guys. And it opened me up to Robert Cormier's books.

Hrm, I was around 11 for that book (I loved it so much my teacher let me have her copy!). I was a VORACIOUS reader as a child because we didn't have money for TV (other than antenna) and such. I remember reading The Odyssey on my own in the 4th grade. I can't imagine reading such a dense book at my age now. :P
