Well it's not stupid to be emotional or sad or any of this, so you can put that worry out of your head.

As for what to do practically, I think you're already well ahead on that one. You've identified something positive (doing well in your studies) for you to put your focus into. You've identified a source of depression (living arrangements) and are working on changing it. This is more proactive than depression usually allows people to be, You're doing good. You can always do better, and I'd recommend talking (Honestly) to a doctor about your options. If they offer you therapy, you might consider it. I've had too many bad runs with therapists to think it'll be any good for me, but it does help some people. You might be one of those people.

The friend stuff I can't help too well with. I don't make lasting real world connections well. I never have. I have work mates I'm friendly with, but beyond that most of my social interactions come from the internet. That's good enough for me. If you can't afford doctoring or therapy, maybe look at what is available at your uni. They have all kinds of groups, but failing any therapeutic Support group type options, if you have any hobbies left untouched by the depression, maybe look at your uni groups dedicated to those hobbies?

"I'm struggling to make any friends at all and find people who actually WANT to spend time with me and I don't feel like a leech begging for attention all day"

That right there is a common thought among all the depressed people I know. Try and squash that shit. You have an illness that warps perspective. Trust the people around you to tell you to fuck off if you're unpleasant and take every time they don't tell you to fuck off as consent to being around you. You will be inclined to read all sorts of things into all sorts of things. You can't trust that inclination. Trust the physical realities: They haven't told you to fuck off, you can still be round them.

As for what you can do. Remember "This too shall pass". there is nothing permanent in this world. No misery no happiness, nothing is without end, it's all a cycle. Every horrible phase, every stretch of misery WILL absolutely end, with or without your help, and be replaced with some happiness sooner or later. Strive to make the misery end quicker and bring the happiness to yourself where ever possible, and strive to make happiness last longer, but remember even if everything is beyond your control - And it rarely is totally beyond your control - even if everything seems hopeless, if you just bear down and wait it out, even this, too, shall pass.
