(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)Looking back on them they're not perfect, but as a young queer kid in an abusive family situation they did a whole lot to kick start the thinking process of "Sure she's a Good Person and she loves me and she wants what's best for me and she's certainly not evil.... but mom treats me a lot more like the Abusive Parents in these books than the Supportive Mentor Characters and I feel a lot more like Main Character does with the Abusive Parents than with the Supportive Mentor..."
That's one thing I really wish Tangled had done. They did an excellent job showing an abusive parent, but the non-abusive parents were just.... more of a concept than characters. It was the insubstantial wish of Maybe My Real And Good Parents Are Out there. They didn't model healthy parenting in contrast to abusive parenting.
