Yeah, GitS was kind of like a lot of other 80s and 90s cyberpunk (or urban tech-fantasy) stuff in that you really had to be there to appreciate it. The anime hit right at the real dawning of consumer internet, when all of a sudden the whole world was colliding into this digital space and technology was changing so rapidly that people couldn't imagine what the world would be like in ten years.

I mean think of all those 80s movies that take place in the distant future of the early 2000s. Plenty of people legit thought that we'd be living in international cyber metropolises with robots and VR cafes and whatever.

A substantial portion of that stuff did come true, or is coming true and just needs to technologically mature to the point where it's going to be viable on the marketplace, or is going to come true in the next 5-10 years

the stuff that didn't come true is mostly just noir, neon signs everywhere, and LA being drenched in rain
