United Airlines Killed a Giant Rabbit

(Anonymous) 2017-04-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
And now people are freaking out about dead rabbits. Which is no fun for my business because we sell rabbits as a livestock animal for meat production. Thanks UA, you're screw up has mobilized the idiot masses who don't even realize you could eat rabbit. Stick to beating up your passengers.

Uhh. I think the problem MIGHT be that this rabbit was a pet that was probably going to be a record breaking size.

Sort of like how people love Hank the Pig but eat bacon. It is different when it is a specific, beloved pet.

Yeah but now we are getting hate messages because we sell rabbits as livestock and a food product. People seem to have decided rabbits can only be pets and we are pet killers like United. We're a niche product in this country, but internationally rabbit still forms a major part of people's diets. We're just getting caught in the ragey fallout from UA's stupidity and incompetence.

Okay. Come back to me when that actually happens.

Is there really a connection? I don't know the story, but presumably the people who buy your rabbits know they're going to be killed, and people who eat rabbit aren't going to stop because one was killed when it wasn't supposed to be.

What is going to happen is that people are going to start saying this is getting more outrage than the passenger who was beaten (even if it isn't) and use it to make up some fake oppression point about how everyone upset by the rabbit is a white person, and white people care more about rabbits than POC. As a white person who owns rabbits, that's going to be annoying as fuck.

No one is going to say that considering how much coverage that the doctor is still getting and will continue to get.

They are going to say it regardless of the facts. They would say it if there was but one single article about the rabbit ever and one person commented with outrage. They will exaggerate and twist the truth so they can make the "White people care more about animals than they care about POC!" rant that comes up whenever an animal death makes the news.

It's kind of always a relevant and useful point to make when an animal death makes the news, though

You sound like an asshole, tbh. I'm having trouble sympathizing with you. Plus, you do in fact murder animals so the hate mail is not exactly a lie.

Nobody in this thread murders animals, so you're probably a troll, but since you're accusing me of murdering animals I think you've mistaken me for the thread OP, which I'm not.

Militant veganism/vegetarianism is usually not a useful stance to bring to discussions like this tbqh

Of course our customers always knew. However rabbit being a niche product here means that a lot of the public didn't know that rabbit was a food animal and not a pet. We're getting hate messages from people who just found out that rabbit is a food and who are not our customers. We're getting called pet killers like United. People are being idiots,

NAYRT--when I was six or seven, I was at our local zoos petting zoo and a mom and her kid were petting a sheep. I still remember being shocked when she told her kid "look, this is where cotton comes from." I have no problem believing some people don't know rabbits are raised for meat. I'm vegetarian, have been for over 20 years, and still thought it was bullshit when I found out it's illegal to eat horsemeat in the US. I'm never gonna be 100% comfortable with people killing animals for meat but it's not like horses are smarter than, say, pigs.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-27 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you and that child have since learned that sheep are not where cotton comes from.

Little me knew the woman didn't know what she was talking about--I don't remember anything much from when I was a toddler now, but back then I probably remembered more from my parents' farm where we lived until I was four. I mean, they didn't grow cotton, but I knew you got wool from sheep, not cotton. Not sure I'd seen a cotton plant before but I knew it came from a plant and not an animal.

Ayrt knew this, that was part of the point they were making.
