That one's always a bit odd to me, because it's strange to hear what seems - to me - like a very militant, revolutionary, ferocious poem repurposed into a patriotic hymn

It has rather been co-opted, yes. I've run into a few Britons that hate the song.

And you know, I suspect Blake would be fine with them expressing their disapproval:
