Re: Question about bowel mechanics

I've been constipated for a while and I managed to shit today but I have no idea how much came out in proportion to how much is still in there. How do I know when I've caught up? Is it possible to catch up without having diarrhea?

I... don't think it works that way. Like, I don't think that if you're constipated for a week that means there's a week's worth of poop inside you that has to get out. So I don't think that worrying about proportion is necessary? Nor do you have to get diarrhea to "catch up".

Address the issues that caused the constipation first. The consistency of your bowel movements will give you clues about how well you're doing:

In my TMI experience as long as everything's moving along again and you've addressed the reason for the constipation (stress, dehydration, not enough fiber, whatever) you'll catch up naturally by either pooping more often or bigger poops. As long as you don't feel uncomfortable then you're fine.

Yes it's possible to catch up without having diarrhea but I would just be concerned with how you feel and addressing why you were constipated in the first place. Drink a lot of water either way.

I don't know if it's possible to "catch up", but at my work there was a kid who was constipated for about a week and when he finally went, he just kept going and going and going. He nearly topped off the toilet! It was that much.

He should have done some flushing part way through.

How do I know when I've caught up?

I've actually always wondered this! I've never been constipated before (weirdest humblebrag ever y/y?) so I've never really understood what it's like, lol.
