Heavens, I hadn't even thought of that. Their shared backstory would be really interesting.

I agree. And considering how I see Sauron's personality, even pre-Morgoth, I'm pretty sure they were rivals. Curumo (Saruman) was the suck up who told on every little thing anyone else did wrong and tried to make it to the top by perfect obedience while Mairon was the one who hated the rules, though he knew better, and wanted to do his own thing.

I think all of the supplemental material improves everything else. I mean, before Tolkien tried to make her a Mary Sue, Galadriel's back history with the Kinslaying really makes her encounter with Frodo a million times more interesting and poignant.

But my favorite is actually info in the appendixes where we learn that Aragorn and Denethor are about the same age and knew each other as young men, and Denethor's dad favored Aragorn, and Denethor maybe suspected who Aragorn really was. This puts a whole new spin on Denethor's actions in LOTR. It's not just loss of power but a personal rivalry that motivates him.

What's with all these secrets that aren't really secrets about Tolkien stuff lately? This would be better suited to a blog or forum, since its not really a confession, it's just talking about the story.

I don't mind them, especially because there have been so few secrets lately. At least the Tolkien person is contributing quite a bit.

But, I do see what you mean. How is this a secret? It's just an opinion, and not a particularly embarrassing or controversial one.

I lie them, because even if I'm indifferent to the specific secret, at least it's something I know a little about, unlike Steven Universe and the vast majority of anime secrets.

I go back on forth on this, according to my mood. Sometimes I want *all the details* and sometimes I just want the basic heroic story with little hints here and there.
