To be fair, who wouldn't be friends with a hobbit, they're awesome. I'd totally be down for tea at Bag End, snarfing down Bilbo's seedcake and destroying his pantry with my gluttony!

Could you get a recipe for seedcake out of the guy?

Bit of an old message from Tolkien there I think

My favourite Gandalf/hobbit friendship will always be Gandalf & Pippin, but yeah, the friendship he had with Bilbo was really special as well. He had so much more time with Bilbo, and I can't help but think that part of the reason he had so much trust in the Fellowship hobbits during the War of the Ring was because Bilbo had already shown him what hobbits were capable of, both in extremis and when it came to resisting the Ring through decades of normal life. If you need someone to survive against all logic and resist temptation against all odds, send a hobbit. Mind you, their priorities are a little skewed at times, and if you also need someone to find the mystical temptation object by fucking tripping over it at opportune/inopportune moments (see Bilbo with the Ring, Bilbo with the Arkenstone, Pippin with the Palantir) you also send a hobbit, but still.

You really do feel that hobbits, as a people, gave Gandalf a lot of hope in dark times. Some particular ones more than others.

It's a good friendship tbh and I also love his friendships with all the hobbits, they're so sweet and they seem to genuinely cheer him.

I do like Bilbo and Gandalf, although I think my favorite Gandalf friendship is probably his friendship with Faramir.

My favorite hobbit friendship is Merry with Theoden. I want them to have that chance to chat about leaf.

Gandalf being a unimaginably powerful being who also likes having a nice sit down with a pipe is one of my favourite things. :)
