Re: How do you share bad news?

From what you've said about your parents, there probably isn't a "good" way to break the news because they don't sound like reasonable folks. (Sorry.) I'd just be straightforward about it and definitely don't keep it secret or drag it out. However, I'd also try to emphasize that you have a plan on how you're going to re-attack the exam - extra study sessions, tutoring, a timeline on how soon you can retake it, etc. Assuring them that you've given it some thought and you have a strategy might help a tiny bit.

I've already passed the Massachusetts bar, so I'm already a lawyer. Retaking it will probably depend on where I get a job at this point. It is just a matter of how much money they shelled out for it.

Ah, well, that's not quite as bad. I'd still stick with figuring out what your plan is going forward and emphasizing that rather than the exam grade.

If you are already a lawyer then why are your parents paying? Fund it your damn self. Lazy bum.

Just tell them you didn't pass this time, but you'll still practice in Mass and that you'll get them their money back in a month or so and will retake the Texan one at your own expense a little later.

Because I'm unemployed? Looking for a job, but haven't found one yet. Taking the Texas bar wasn't my idea. They insisted and took the money out of their retirement before I could tell them not to.

You didn't mention that. In case, that's entirely on them and I wouldn't feel too bad about not passing.

How the fuck do you get to be an unemployed lawyer? Go to Mass. get a stack of business cards and hand them out on courthouse steps. Remember the constitution only says that a defendant is entitled to a lawyer, not a competent lawyer.

Employment opportunities for lawyers are not actually very plentiful compared to the number of people earning law degrees. (And I don't think your lawyer you're entitled to is entitled to get paid by the state if you hired them but couldn't afford to pay them.)
