His reasons were that he'd fucking lost his passion for skating. People don't magically stay passionate forever. He lost it well before Yuuri, and then Yuuri managed to spark some passion again.

You really just want this to be the Yurio Tsundere Show, don't you?

If you want to word it like that, then it's a wish fulfillment fantasy in both ways. "The hero is exactly who you need in your life. He wants you for who you're, gives you back the passion you were missing and in the end you get, thanks to the hero, love, life and inspiration to go on."
