It's because Griffin McElroy is an amazing GM.

It's because it's played from an improv POV with an audience in mind

For real, I can scarcely even fathom the amount of time and work and thought he has to be putting into this one podcast — the writing, the editing, the planning, the acting, the music. He is revoltingly talented.

I can't speak to what might have caused it to hit the tipping point in general, but I started listening after a friend recommended it to me and I saw some cute animation for it (Taako and the pottery thing.)

(And I've tried a few other D&D podcasts, but nothing clicked for me the way this one has.)

Just looking at the fanart for this, I'd say there is at least a sizeable overlap between WtNV and TAZ fans. At least where it comes to the "must have the most speshul and original quirky tumblr-SJW approved design for the fandom darling" thing I've seen going on.

I'd wager for a lot of the fans it's more about the chemistry between the podcasters than the fact that it's D&D- it's a fun improv-y listen.

...I'm happy it's getting more people interested in playing, honestly!

I started listening to this show recently because I enjoy some of the podcasters' other shows and thought it sounded entertaining and silly. And it was, but I also wound up so emotionally invested in the characters and story, whoops. I'll bet it hit a lot of people the same way. Griffin McElroy is a funny guy, but he's also a surprisingly good storyteller, as it turns out.

(and just in the last month or two, there have been a lot of big and emotional plot twists, so that might account for why you're seeing more of it all of a sudden!)

That art is fully as sin. Ugh.
