Good responses here, and I wanted to add: I was always a fan of the tag (which I don't see used too often anymore) "[Characters A/B] if you squint" -- middle ground, I'd say. You have some shippy moments, but nothing overt or physical happens.

That way you can get both the shippyfans and the genfic fans skipping it. I look at the tag and think "skip. too much shippy in my Gen story" and the shippydippys look at it and think "skip. not enough cuddle time for my masturbation". Its the tag that lets both groups skip over it.
