...I mean, McGenji is like barely one step above McHanzo in terms of throwing random hot dudes together. There's really no hinting that they're friends or anything.

I'm not trying to shit on you for shipping it or anything, I just don't really get the kind of offhanded "oh that doesn't ever do it for me on it's own ever" comment sort of disparaging McHanzo when McGenji is just as guilty of being pretty much pure wank fodder because people like the idea of fandom's headcanon of McCree as the sexual, playfully dominant cowboy putting the moves on fandom's headcanon of Genji as the submissive cockslut (which is such a pervasive Genji headcanon no matter who you ship him with, and it's a huge pet peeve of mine, but that's neither here nor there!). There's no actual canon to draw from for McGenji, they don't really speak to one another in comics, there's literally one voice line (that sounds more like McCree is offhand threatening to murder Genji) and that's the exact same amount that Hanzo/McCree get (and I'd argue the McCree/Hanzo line fits their fandom interpretations of the taciturn Hanzo and the flirty McCree better even if I don't ship them either)....yeeeah.

I don't know if being agents in blackwatch at the same time is 'barely one step above McHanzo' who genuinely don't know one another. Also the one interaction MH have was mainly added because of the ship being the fandom juggernaut. Idk I don't really have a horse in the race but I see MG having enough basis to be a feasible ship

I mean they were agents in Blackwatch at the same time, that doesn't scream "besties/potential ship" to me though. For all we know they barely interacted. Not to mention again, the one snippet of interaction we have between them sounds like they're not exactly buddy-buddy, which seems to be the default fanon interpretation for McGenji.

Regarding the McHanzo thing, look I don't ship it and I think they're as ridiculous as McGenji, ReaperGenji and a bunch of other ships where it's pretty obvious wank material and nothing else, but is there one shred of evidence to point to that interaction being added because it's a fandom juggernaut?

Pharmercy and Genyatta are two other fandom juggernauts, and I don't see Overwatch adding nods to them.

I fail to see how McGenji has any more basis in canon than McHanzo at this point. I know this fandom doesn't exactly have a huge wealth of evidence for most of the ships (even ships like Genyatta, Gency and Reaper/76 (I have no clue what the portmanteau is for this ship) don't exactly have a huge abundance of fodder, even if the canon has implied deep relationships between them), but McGenji has basically nothing. It's literally one sort of antagonistic sounding line during gameplay and the nebulous idea that they were in the same organization at the same time. (So were Mercy and Winston but I don't think they were fucking like bunnies!)

I would consider that barely a step above McHanzo, yes. As much as I really don't enjoy the ship, at least the McHanzo line seems to imply the fanon dynamic of McCree being a thorn in Hanzo's side (if you want to extrapolate on that and imagine it's sexual that's obvious fanon but still) and Hanzo being annoyed by his uncouth American Cowboy-ness exists. McCree and Genji's fanon "bestest friends" thing has basically zero evidence to it right now.

...Genji was a known playboy. I'm not surprised he'd be turned into the fandom's massive raging turbo slut.
