Israel recognizes Ethiopian Jews as Jews. Ethiopian Jews recognize your unwanted white-knighting as a threat to their existence, because you oppose their right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland.

Only in the same way the American South recognizes African American rights and condemns segregation. It is a paper law, a token statement, and it does not match the social reality. Of course with so many Israelis having American ancestry and having immigrated from the United States of America, what can we expect in their attitude towards black people? It is the combination of refusing to accept that black people can be one of God's Chosen because they are not a Semitic group and good old Jim Crow racism.

Ethiopian Jews face discrimination every day in Israel, being quietly sterilized is just the tip of a very large and nasty iceberg that won't melt in the face of a few after the fact attempts at rationalization.
