I love you. I mean, seriously. I just-- Oh. You are-- We should be friends. Who are you? I mean-- Oh, I don't even know what to say. But you just said what I've always been trying to say, absolutely perfectly.

Seriously. Man, I actually got hit the face when I told someone I liked Shinji. As in, literally, a punch in the face. Also, it should be noted that I'm a girl, and he was a guy that easily weighed sixty or so pounds more, at least, and I didn't even know him. I mean-- wtf? Why do people hate Shinji? And why do they hate Shinji so much?

Shinji's real, and I love him, as a character, because he screws up, but he keeps trying. And because a lot of the things he does, are things that I'd probably do. I'd be scared, I'd be broken, I'd probably cry myself to sleep every night. And dude. Being human is not a reason to be hated. D:

I've heard theories before that the typical anime fanboy enjoys escapism, and Shinji's reactions are realistic enough that it makes it impossible to escape into. He's scared and broken by his experience, as a lot of real people would be...maybe people see too much of themselves in him?

Still, though, punching you in the face?! That's...insane. O_O

A lot of fanGIRLS seem to be the same way.

And that's always what I thought. People just can't deal with the idea that, maybe, having a giant robot is NOT fun.

Oh yeah, definitely fangirls, too. I was using "fanboys" in a generic sort of way.

A giant robot would maybe be fun...but definitely not fighting aliens.

Giant robots = fun for recreational use only. :P

Well, that's more for my "people who hate Shinji are asses" list. :/

I was at my friend's house, for a Halloween party. My friend is really, really into anime, so most of his friends are too, right? So this guy's all, "blah blah, and I liked the mecha in Eva, 'cause they're so realistic."

And I'm all, "blah blah, I liked Shinji."

And he freaking punches me in the face. And my friend grabbed the guy, and dragged him out, and made him leave the party. Since, we've never been invited to the same things at the same time. Like, I get invited to the family birthday parties and Christmas parties. The punching-guy gets invited to the omg-it's-finals-week and yay-it's-summer-let's-party parties. Which I'm really okay with, 'cause I don't want to see someone who is so-- so hateful of a character he hits a real person.

The worst someone ever did to me IRL for liking Shinji was just snapping at me after I said I like him. We were talking about Evangelion, and this is what happened:

Me: I like Shinji. Everyone hates him, but-
Guy: ...He's a whiner!

That guy turned out to be a jerk in all ways. :/

I adore Shinji and it upsets me that people don't like him and call him an emo kid. It's like...what would you do if you had to pilot something like that and have to save the whole city? I think he's really brave and I really look up to him.

Seconded, to all of that.

And it DOES upset me. I get more worked up than I should about a fictional character, but I'm just protective of him, for some reason. I mean... He's just doing the best he can. What the hell could he have done that was so wrong? D:

For serious. Besides, it's not like Shiniji is emo ALL the time. There are plenty of times that Shinji gets an attitude with Misato-which I love it when he does.

Yeah, that's one of the awesome things about him. He has that little snarky streak. Which fits in perfectly with the whole picture really. I always saw him as generally too serious for his age, but just a normal, fragile kid under that.

I don't think emo is even really how to describe him. Emo is when you whine in an obnoxious fashion for no reason. Shinji just feels bad for a very good reason and sometimes shows it in a normal way. (He really doesn't "whine" as much as people say. They seem to be forgetting that most of the times when he even talked about how he felt at length were during scenes that took place in his head. Good luck not ever THINKING about how you're unhappy, bashers. D:)

I just wish people would love Shinji more along with Kaworu. Kaworu needs love too.

Shinji and Kaworu = Lovely characters. And so unique! Much win.

Oh of course. I mean...I see how Rei can be good for him and Asuka...but..Kaworu is a much better choice.

I've never really though much about pairings in that show (because I'm just not a big shipper when it comes to anything), but yeah, there's just something special about the interaction between them. Heck, Shinji has a lot of interesting friendships with various people. ^^

I agree! Shinji gets so much hate just for reacting like a real 14 year old kid would.

Stupid shounen heroes, giving people skewed perspectives of reality. :P

I agree as well. Shinji really is a cool character in his own right.
