08 -- some of them scare me as well, and I'm not a part of the fandom.

09 - OVERCLOCKED!!! I love that site, especially the Sonic remixes...

10 -- If it's a background OC, I don't mind, but I can't stand an OC as the main character, especially if they're paired with a canon character. No, just... no.

37 -- ??? People are simply interested in what they want to be interested in. I have little interest in Het, and before I even knew what "Yaoi" or "Slash" was I was reading gay fic. No need to be furious over other folk's likes, focus on your own.

77 -- They cancelled it and uncancelled it? Why? I loved the show.

Not!Secret #2 -- LOLOLOLOLOL

but I can't stand an OC as the main character, especially if they're paired with a canon character. No, just... no.

Am I the only person who doesn't mind when this happens?

Re: 10

It's very, very rarely well done. Often I'm left thinking, "Who are you? Why are you here? I don't care about you. Couldn't someone else from the show be doing what you are doing?"

There are actually I few examples when it worked, but... I can't think of it off the top of my head.

Re: 10

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I absolutely agree, it's rarely well done, but I love it when it is well done and it just seems like there are a lot of people who wouldn't like it even if it was done brilliantly.

Re: 10

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite kind of OCs are parody kinds, where a completely average, normal person narrates the crazy events surrounding her as she's catapulted into a show's universe. I think there's a Heroes fic going around told from the perspective of Nathan's campaign aid...

Re: 10

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've ever read a story with an OC like that but it would certianly be interesting. O8

Re: 10

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I've never come across one well written, which is why I now avoid them like the plague for the most part. I'll happily read any good ones if you point them in my direction though.

Re: 10

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't point you to any as I have not written them ye- I MEAN. I'll point you towards some when I come across them. The problem I tend to run into is that fics that have good and well-written OCs fail when it comes to portraying the canon characters, and then writers who have the canon characters down pat fail in the OC department.

Re: 10

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn! I just realized that I *have* indeed been reading a (KKM) fic with an OC as one of the central characters! She's a baddie though, but well-written.

I guess I forgot her since she seems as though she could be a canon character...

Seasons of Beautiful Wolfram (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4109891/1/Seasons_of_Beautiful_Wolfram)

It's up to Chapter 21 (was updated yesterday or today), and it has been good so far! It's Yuuram/Wolfyuu, or course!

Snap, I've read that one already. :[

I don't read a lot of fanfic... But I don't mind 'em one bit, as long as they're not super Mary Sues and aren't breaking up any canon pairings. O:

37 -- ??? People are simply interested in what they want to be interested in. I have little interest in Het, and before I even knew what "Yaoi" or "Slash" was I was reading gay fic. No need to be furious over other folk's likes, focus on your own.

To be fair, I don't think the anger was about people liking slash, it was about the het pairings not getting equal love, which is a valid thing to be annoyed about. I often feel the same way... I'm happy that people enjoy their yaoi (etc), I just wish that there was more balance (and not in the sense of "less yaoi" but "more het" so there was a nice equal ratio)

Re: 08; 09; 10; 37; 77; Not!Secret #2

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just that the OP wrote that she/he was "furious" over it. How can one be furious because others prefer writing one type of pairing to another?

Still, if people want more het, they either have to write it or wait on someone else to -- and at the end of the day it's up to the writer whether or not they want to write het or slash, and they aren't obligated to write one because it's lacking in whatever fandom.

Re: 08; 09; 10; 37; 77; Not!Secret #2

[identity profile] usagivindaloo.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I do see your point on the first: "furious" is a rather strong word.

I agree and disagree on the second. I do totally see your point, but... well, if I were in a fandom where my OTP was really popular, but there was another pairing that wasn't as popular, I would start writing for that less popular pairing, even if I despised the pairing itself. The way I look at it, it would be the least I could do... if I had tons of fic to read, it would only be fair to make sure other fans had just as much to read as I did.

Of course, so far I haven't had that chance as all my pairings are on the other side of the popularity fence. -_- Still, I'm hoping one day I can find a way to ensure everyone in the fandom has just as many fics to read as the popular OTP fans. ^_^ I'm a bit of a crazy idealist that way. XD

Re: 08; 09; 10; 37; 77; Not!Secret #2

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm currently working on a looooooooooooong fic for an unpopular (not due to hate for the pairing, just due to the pairing not being explored that much) fic, but only because I got an idea for it. I wouldn't go out of my way solely because it's underrepresented.

However, I couldn't write a fic for a pairing I hated simply because I couldn't do that pairing justice. I respect anyone who can.

Re: 08; 09; 10; 37; 77; Not!Secret #2

[identity profile] usagivindaloo.livejournal.com 2008-05-22 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe, guess it just takes different sorts; I do consider underrepresentation as a reason to work on a pairing/idea/whatever, but then that's just me.

LOL, I did try working on a pairing I hated, twice actually... for Sephiroth/Cloud (obviously not an unpopular pairing; it was a personal challenge). I pretty much said, "OK, I really dislike this pairing, but I want to challenge myself and see if I can make it believable and do the pairing justice." I think I did OK as most fans of the pairing said they couldn't tell it was written by a non-fan. Sadly, it did not inspire them to try their hand at Sephiroth/Tifa, so I will have to footle along and try to write about ten thousand fanfics to balance everything out, LOL. XD
